Aaron James Finch, popularly known as Aaron Finch is an aggressive batsman in the national Australian cricket team. He currently captains the Australian National cricket team in T-20 international matches. He formerly captained the Australian cricket team in one-day international matches. He is one of the most successful -20 players for Australia. He holds so many records. Not only this but he is also away from any kind of controversy.

Background

Aaron Finch was born on 17 November 1986 in Colac, Victoria in Australia to Gary Finch and Sue Finch. During the initial days of his career, he played in Colac west cricket club as a wicketkeeper-batsman. He also played for Colac and District Cricket Association. Aaron Finch was part of Australia’s national squad in the under-19 cricket World Cup which was held in Sri Lanka. In domestic cricket, Aaron Finch is part of Victoria. He also plays for team Melbourne Renegades.

Aaron Finch is an opening batter who occasionally bowls left-arm spin. Finch played his first international match against the English Team in January 2011. It was a T-20 match. Thereafter, he made his one-day international debut against the Sri Lankan team. It took him two years from his first international match to play his first day international. His T-20 performance is just mind-blowing. He holds the record of being the first cricketer to cross the 150 runs milestone in a T-20 international. In August 2016, he scored 156 runs from 63 balls against England which is also the highest individual score in T-20 internationals. For this magnificent performance, Aaron Finch was honoured with the Men’s T20 International player of the year in the year 2014.

Career Highlights

Aaron Finch was part of the Australian team in the 2015 cricket World Cup and helped the team to lift the cup that year.

In Australia’s tour of New Zealand in the year 2017, because of Mathew wade’s withdrawal from the team due to an injury, Finch got the opportunity to lead the Australian team.

In September 2018, Aaron Finch got the golden opportunity to make his Test debut. His test debut was against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates. Allan border presented him with his cap in his debut match. He scored 62 and 49 runs in the two innings of the match.

One of the major feathers that were added to Finch’s cricket career was the captaincy of the Australian team in the 2019 cricket World Cup.

Aaron Finch was successfully nominated for ICC Men’s T-20 cricketer of the decade in the year 2020.  

Aaron Finch holds the record of Australia’s highest run-getter in the T-20 international format by going past David Warner in 2021. Later on, Aaron Finch was named as Australia’s skipper for the 2021 ICC Men’s T-20 world cup. Finch managed to lead Australia to their first T-20 world cup defeating New Zealand.

Aaron Finch announced his retirement from one-day international cricket on 10th September 2022. He continues to play a T-20 international match and also oversees its captaincy.

Talking about his married life, Aaron Finch married his then-girlfriend Amy Griffiths on April 7, 2018.  The couple has a daughter.

Aaron Finch played for several franchise in IPL i.e., Indian Premier league. Rajasthan Royals was the first IPL team he was selected for back in 2010. He played for Rajasthan Royals for 1 year. For the next two years, he was part of Delhi Daredevils. In the year 2014, he switched to Pune warriors for a year. For the next two seasons that is for 2014 and 2015, he played for Sun risers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians respectively. Gujarat Lions brought him in the year 2016. He played for Gujarat Lions for 2 years after that Kings XI Punjab brought him for a year. He didn’t play in the IPL of 2019 so he can focus on the 2019 cricket World Cup. In the year 2022, he was brought by the Royal challengers Bangalore. In 2022 he played for Kolkata knight riders in place of Alex Hales.

Apart from this Finch has also played county cricket in England. He played for Yorkshire County cricket club in 2014 and 2015. In 2016 he joined Surrey. For Surrey, he scored the highest T-20 individual score in county cricket at Hove County Ground.

 Aaron Finch currently owns the record for two of the top three individual scores in Twenty20 Internationals (T20I), He scored 172 against Zimbabwe in July 2018 and broke his previous record of 156 against England which he scored in 2013.  In the year 2018, he became the first player in the world to reach 900 rating points on the official International Cricket Council (ICC) T20I rankings. He also does a part-time commentary for Fox Cricket and Triple M.

Aaron Finch has made his name in world cricket all because of his hard work. He has immensely contributed to cricket. Not only Australia but world cricket will remember him as an aggressive batsman who played magnificent T-20 innings. He is among the finest opening batsman that Australia could have.
